"Extinct" Bird Seen, Eaten

February 18, 2009 - A rare quail from the Philippines was photographed for the first time before being sold as food at a poultry market, experts say.

Found only on the island of Luzon, Worcester's buttonquail was known solely through drawings based on dated museum specimens collected several decades ago.

Scientists had suspected the species—listed as "data deficient" on the International Union for Conservation of Nature's 2008 Red List—was extinct.

A TV crew documented the live bird in the market (above) before it was sold in January, according to the Agence France-Press news agency.

Michael Lu, president of the Wild Bird Club of the Philippines, told AFP the bird's demise should inspire a "local consciousness" about the region's threatened wildlife.

"What if this was the last of its species?" Lu said.

Look what corpse-munchers do to loving cows, chickens, pigs, and other partners on this planet we all have the privilege of sharing. Corpse-munchers do not know how to conduct themselves in the universe. We search in outer space for other life forms; yet, most apathetic pus-chuggers ignore the many amazing beings right here on Earth. All corpse-munchers really care about is how that one will taste.

  1. Nice looking bird actually, like a chicken with eagle feathers. Sad story.

  2. Well, they say the one way to make sure a species will survive is to figure on how to make it's existence "profitable"... Once an animal can "pay their way" - they'll stick around by man's whim and will... But never, of course for his or her own purpose... Sickening isn't it?

  3. People suck. Why couldn't or wouldn't the TV crew buy the bird instead of letting it be sold for food?? If ya think its the last damn bird then don't just sit there, do something.

Yeah, I'm confused by us humans...we can be such a stupid species sometimes.

  4. Humans, nothing but Mouths. Animals eat and give so much - eggs, milk, wool, etc. Humans are the only "animal" that takes, and takes, and takes and only returns S**t.
